Prince Harry wore a German army uniform to a party, and included a Swastika. He is an idiot, and at 20 not even a very young idiot. I just want to say one thing: a lot of media commentary points out that he was wearing a Afrika Corp uniform, and that the Arfika Corp was headed by Rommel. By association readers could think that Rommel was a fanatic Nazi. Well, he wasn't. Rommel was connected to the plot to kill Hitler. Because of his tremendous wartime record (Churchill spoke admiringly of Rommel's leadership to the House of Commons during the war) Rommel was allowed the honour of killing himself rather than being executed by Nazi thugs.

Australia is governed by a time capsule. John Howard says that gay marriage is wrong because marriage is all about having children and "survival of the species" (so if you are married but have not bred 2.1 children watch out), that Australians all love our flag again after the Sydney Olympics, that indigenous Australia is ok now because 130 Aborigines are working on the 1400 km long railway running through the desert connecting Alice Springs (population 23 000) to Darwin (82 000), and now he thinks we should bring back the death penalty. Please, would someone get Bob Carr to save us all and enter Federal politics?

I just bought a hp iPAQ 1915 to replace my venerable Palm Vx (the ipaq 1915 is basically the same as the 1910). I am happy, mainly because the price I paid for the 1915 was unbeatable ... at normal prices I would still buy the Palm Zire 71, although using the Pocket PC for a week has been much more enjoyable than I expected. An updated graph (December 2004) of the share of the Mozilla browser as a % of total browser activity at this site, plus shares of Konqueror and Opera. My stats program has been showing Firefox as a separate line since November 2004. For comparability, I will keep it in the Mozilla-based share total and also show Firefox browser share as a separate data series. Firefox showed a dramatic leap in December 2004.

People ask for me for some simple advice about security on the internet.Here is a five minute scan of the basics.I assume people are using Microsoft operating systems, if you are using Linux then you have less to worry about and you probably know enough anyway.

Despite all the doom and gloom about spam, there are some effective ways of dealing with it. I have an email address widely known on the internet since I have been using it for years, long before I cared about spam. Of course, I am smarter now, but I used to get lots of spam. Now I get almost none.
The first blow against spam was when I moved to challenge and response provider. These work well. Email from a new sender (eg a spam mail, but also a friend with a new email account) will not automatically arrive at your inbox. You either review such unverified mail (if you are expecting such an email) or the sender answers the challenge sent by the system. This works because spammers never answer such a challenge; they have non-existent email addresses to being with. [more]

A few weeks ago I bought a Philips Matchline SA963SA DVD/SACD player. The last few hours have been my first opportunity to sit down and listen to it play SACD discs. The machine is a good buy, in fact I find it, well, amazing. This is probably a comment on the advances in value for money in DVD and SACD players, or maybe this player is going to collect a stack of awards ... but I see similar comments in reviews of Sony equipment at this price level. Perhaps Sony and Philips have decided to kick start the SACD market by discounting on the hardware. My ears are very happy about this. This is the first serious Philips audio component I have bought. The people behind this player should be very proud, although I wish they hired an English speaker to proof-read the manual. Here is a review of a similar model {{ link: http://www.whatvideotv.com/testbench/frame.html?http://www.whatvideotv.com/testbench/DVDPlayers/Philips/PhilipsDVD-962SA.php review of 962SA}}

But the real story is SACD. I am now completely convinced that this is huge advance in music reproduction.

I have a good stereo system. My speakers and amplifier are Stereophile magazine class B components, which means pretty good stuff at non-ridiculous prices. It is not high-end gear, but it clearly shows remarkable differences between the two digital formats. My CD player was quite good also (it is now looking for something to do). In this environment, SACD is amazing. I didn't expect such a breakthrough in the reproduction of music in my house. The twenty-year-old promises of digital music have happened at last. I expected some improvement over CD, but what I hear is a revelation. If you listen to music with any intensity, you must take the chance to listen to it. In fact, I would just upgrade on faith.

I was in Jakarta for a few days with Tris in March 2003. We stayed with her sister, visited her immediate family who live in Bogor, Bekasi and other satellites of Jakarta proper. I was quite impressed with the progress Jakarta is making. My last visit was about a year before, and I have visited at least twice a year since 1999. One of my key personal indicators is the number and composition of red-light beggars. At the worst (which was about 1999) at virtually every red light your car would be approached by small squads of your men, often strumming a wrecked guitar, begging for loose coins. There were also the non-uniformed traffic cops, who would stand in the middle of busy intersections and pretend to wave traffic this way and that, also hoping to get coins for the service.

A personal message ... our house hunting is going quite well. It has been an experience; that was predictable since it is our first purchase anywhere, let alone in Europe. Key lessons so far:
(1) be very explicit in all relations with real estate agents (makelaars)
(2) expect financing to be quite complicated if neither you nor your partner is Dutch.
Contact me at 'tim at richardson.net' for more info if you think my experiences could be helpful.
For some thoughts on the financial arguments for buying a house in the netherlands, read on ...
